Varna, jati, and the word caste
English flattened two older facts into one courtroom word. Learn both if you want to know where you come from.

Most Hindus meet the word caste the way they meet a charge sheet. Someone else has already decided what it means. The older country had two facts that are not the same thing. If you cannot tell them apart, you will keep arguing about a translation.
Two words, not one
Varna is the fourfold scheme in the texts: brahmana, kshatriya, vaishya, shudra. Function, learning, protection, production, service. In the Gita (4.13) Krishna says this fourfold was made by guna and karma, quality and action. Later practice, in many places, treated it as birth. Both of those sentences are true. Hindus have been arguing about the gap for a very long time.
Jati is the lived world. Thousands of named communities, usually marrying among themselves, often tied to a craft, a region, a temple, a gotra. This is what an elder actually meant when she asked whose people you were. Not a four-box chart. A name with a history.
The Portuguese word casta got laid over both. British census work then froze a lot of local, messy practice into all-India boxes. A surprising amount of what we fight about now is that freeze, not a verse as it was read in a village in 1400.
What the old map was trying to do
A society needs different kinds of work. Someone has to remember the books. Someone has to fight. Someone has to grow, trade, and make. Someone has to keep the ordinary world running. The varna scheme is an attempt to give those functions dignity and duty, not only wages.
That is the part worth recovering as orientation. You come from a people that thought in work and duty, not only in rights and feelings. A person was supposed to have a place to stand, and a standard for standing there.
What it became, and what we should not pretend
Birth hardened. Rank hardened. Some people were kept from wells, temples, letters, a decent marriage. Pretending that did not happen is not memory. It is advertising.
The tradition also argued with itself. The Gita's guna-karma line is one argument. Bhakti poets are another. Buddha, Basava, the medieval saints, later reformers. A Hindu who only hears the indictment from a textbook has been given half the file. A Hindu who only hears the defense has been given the other half.
How to locate yourself
If you know your jati, start there. It is a craft, a river, a set of names, a way of marrying, sometimes a hurt, sometimes a pride that is earned. That is ancestry. It is not a license to look down on the next house.
If you do not know it, that is also a modern fact. Cities, conversion, reform, shame, and simple forgetting all did that work. The map is still useful. You can learn what the words meant without using them as a weapon.
Varna, read as function, can still ask a clean question: what work is mine, and am I doing it? Jati, read as community, can still ask another: who are my people, and what do I owe them? Neither question requires you to humiliate anyone.
What this page is for
Orientation. So a Hindu is not only handed the colonial and political version of himself. So caste does not remain a word that only other people get to define.
It is not a ranking exercise. If you finish this page and start sorting your friends, you have read it wrong. Learn the two older words. Then read the rest of the series with a little more ground under your feet.
