The Maratha lesson
Swarajya was less a throne than a proof. A people split by court, jati, and countryside could still act as a people.
The useful thing about Shivaji is not the statue. It is the problem he had to solve.
A people can be many things at once: village, jati, language, court, sect. Those are real. They are also how a people is kept from acting as a people.
The bind
The Maratha lesson is not that difference disappears. It is that difference can be bound to a purpose larger than the usual quarrel.
Swarajya, in this telling, is self-rule as a civilizational act. Not a request that a distant court remember you. A decision to remember yourself.
What it is not
It is not a license for contempt. It is not a demand that every Hindu become a Maratha. It is not a costume.
If the lesson is used to humiliate another Indian community, it has been misread. The point was capacity.
Why it still matters
A people that can only unite around a grievance will come apart when the grievance is rebranded. A people that can unite around duty has something to do on an ordinary Tuesday.
Forts are stone. The bind is the inheritance.
