Ramayana and Mahabharata

A people without epics has to invent its ethics every morning. That is tiring, and it makes them easy to steer.

These two are not competing franchises. They are two instruments in the same case.

Exile

The Ramayana is about conduct when you have been sent away from the house you were meant to keep. How to hold a vow when the vow costs you the throne. How to treat a forest as a classroom. How to refuse the cheap shortcut that would make you smaller than the promise you made.

Exile is also a condition. Diaspora lives it. So does anyone who has been talked out of their own memory.

Conflict

The Mahabharata is about dharma after the clean options are spent. Kin against kin. Law against love. Duty that will not sit still long enough for a slogan.

It does not tell you that good people win. It tells you that a people who cannot think in hard cases will be ruled by people who can.

Why both

Read them together and a third thing shows up. The four aims get tested. Dharma in a forest. Artha and a throne. Kama and a kidnapping, a dice game, a marriage that is also a political fact. Moksha as the question hanging over all of it: is this the last word?

That is why they are still worth the time. Not to recite. To stay literate.
