Division of labor, not a ranking
The caste system as social integration: specialized work, mutual dependence, and movement through skill and conduct. The Purusha body image is one Vedic picture of that whole.

English says caste and then stops thinking. The older operating idea was a social system: divide the necessary work so a people can live as one. Knowledge. Protection. Production. Craft. Take one away and the others become speeches.
This is a way of ordering labor, not a religion of blood. The Gita (4.13) treats the fourfold as guna and karma, quality and action. That is the mobility clause. Later practice often froze standing into birth. Both facts belong in the same paragraph. The freeze is not the whole story, and it is not the part that orients.
How a society held together
A large people needs more than a mood of unity. It needs jobs that actually get done, and a way for those jobs to recognize one another.
- Counsel and teaching, so the order stays intelligible.
- Protection and public duty, so a household can sleep and a market can open.
- Farming, herds, trade, surplus, so the others can eat.
- Craft and service, so there is a house, a cloth, a road, a meal.
That is efficient division of labor. It is also integration. Each function is in debt to the other three. Contempt for any one of them is a system error, not a traditional virtue.
Fluid movement
The working theory was not that a person is glued to a box. Standing was supposed to be able to move with skill, conduct, and recognition. A soldier could be made by service. A teacher by learning. A trader by competence. Communities themselves shifted, split, and were reclassified. Sanskritization, royal grant, and plain usefulness all did that work in different centuries.
The later census freeze, and some older hardening into endogamy, is what made the map look like a cage. Orientation means you can see the designed mobility and the later lock. Pretending there was never a lock is advertising. Pretending there was never a working system is someone else finishing your sentence.
The body image, named honestly
The Purusha Sukta (Rig Veda 10.90) pictures the four as coming from one cosmic person: mouth, arms, thighs, feet. Later teaching turned that into a body: a head that remembers, arms that protect, a trunk that stores and trades, hands and legs that make and carry.
That analogy has been used for a long time. It is a picture of one organism, not a ranking of souls. Nobody serious treats a hand as less human than a head. The body dies if it tries. Keep the image if it helps you see integration. Do not treat it as anatomy, and do not let it replace the simpler social fact: specialized work, mutually required.
The four, as work
Brahmana. Learning and counsel. Study that is not vanity. Teaching that is not a brand. Advice that can tell a king no. Failure mode: priestcraft, using the books as a fence.
Kshatriya. Protection and public duty. Force with a limit. Failure mode: the bully with a flag, or the official who will not stand when standing costs.
Vaishya. Production and trade. Grain, cattle, commerce, the surplus that lets a festival happen. Failure mode: hoarding dressed up as virtue.
Shudra. Craft and service. The making of the ordinary world. Not leftover labor. Failure mode: contempt, usually from people who have never built anything.
What this is not
It is not a license to humiliate. It is not a claim that every historical practice was kind. Birth hardened in many places. Some doors closed. The tradition also argued with itself about that.
Jati, the named community you actually come from, is a different word. Thousands of them. That is the lived texture. Varna is the large division of labor. Together they were how a society tried to stay whole.
A Hindu looking for roots can start with two questions. What work keeps the others possible? And was the door supposed to be able to move? Those questions integrate. Ranking your neighbor does not.
