Cohesion watch: two calendars, one Ganesha
Raksha Bandhan sits beside two dates for Ganesha this fortnight. If that becomes a test of who is authentic, the week has already failed.

This week's pulse is a calendar problem that is not really a calendar problem.
Raksha Bandhan falls Thursday, August 27. West Michigan Hindu Temple notes a lunar eclipse that evening and marks Shravana Purnima beside it. Upakarma sits in the same cluster of days. Some temples will mark Vinayaka Chaturthi this week. Maharashtrian mandals in metro Detroit wait for Ganesha on September 14.
Two panchangs. One Ganesha.
If that becomes "who is authentic," we fail the Rama test. Alliance, not sameness. Treating a date as a schism is para-dharma theater. The Katha Upanishad already named the fork: shreyas and preyas, the good and the pleasant. Comfortable fragmentation is the pleasant path. It feels like survival. It is not.
A naming operation
Saturday, August 29, a large Hindu gathering is set for Madison Square Garden under the name Universal Oneness, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan. Organizers expect thousands. More than a hundred Hindu American groups are listed as joining. RSS sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat is slated to address it.
Ahead of the visit, USCIRF Chair Asif Mahmood and Commissioner Gene Mills called for sanctions on RSS members and no high-level meetings. HinduPACT pushed back. Some Hindu-identified voices joined the opposition.
Read the move, not the press release. A gathering is being pre-classified as illegitimate so American Hindus will split in advance, into "safe" and "suspect." Do not let a federal advisory body, or any faction, assign your svadharma.
Attend or don't on the merits of the teaching. Do not make an organization's brand the identity. Last week's rule still holds: refuse the purity test.
What the week actually asks
Rama was offered the throne and took the forest. He then gathered who would stand: Sugriva, Hanuman, Vibhishana. Not a unanimous Ayodhya. A shared purpose.
Shivaji's 96k were the same lesson at scale. Many duties, one Swarajya.
Two calendars this fortnight are not a fracture. Treating them as one would be. The pleasant choice is to stay in your WhatsApp wall and call the other date wrong. The good choice is to keep the thread taut: teach, ally, refuse the naming.
Unity in community is that sequence. Not a meeting. A choice.
